KELP FOREST
PHANTA SEA
August 18, 2019
My traveling daughter Ella gave me the inspiration for this one. She sent me a photo of Waimea Bay, Oahu where she’s vacationing. I am here in L.A. imagining the warm blue water and how I’d enjoy floating aimlessly.

THE CONTINUITY OF WAVES

She is reflective as the waves tumble behind her. She has experienced ups and downs. She has been shaken at times. But she has grown stronger, wiser.
As the painting comes together, I remember a day when I was a teenager. I was on a raft in the ocean with my friend. We were pretty far out when she mentioned she couldn’t swim. I felt a sense of panic but also a sense of awe that she would be so brave as to trust a blow-up raft and me to keep her safe. It was naive of her but she was just a kid.
We never know what lies ahead. But there’s continuity in the waves as they break upon the shore. There’s comfort in that.
